Changing Fractions to Decimals

 To change a fraction to a decimal, divide the bottom number into the top number.

Example 1 Change into a decimal.

Step 1

Divide the bottom number into the top number:

Since 2does not go into 1, put  a 0 above 1.

Step 3

Add a point after 1 and 0

Step 4

Add a 0 after 1.

Step 5

Consider the numbers before and after the point one number: 1.0 in this case is 10. Divide this number (10) by 2: 10 ÷ 2 = 5. Write 5 after the point next to 0.

Step 6

Multiply: 5 x 2 = 10 and write 10 under 1.0

Step 7

Subtract the 2 10s: 10 -10 = 0

Step 8

The answer is 0.5
