Anything that has mass and takes up space is
called matter. Everything around you is matter. Your chair, your desk, your
body, and even the air you breathe are all matter.
Thousands of years ago, people thought all matter was made of different
combinations of four substances: earth, fire, water, and air. Scientists have
discovered that matter is actually made up of tiny particles called atoms.
In this lesson we will learn about atoms and how they combine in chemical
reactions.
When you have completed this lesson, you will be able to
explain how during chemical reactions atoms rearrange to form products with different properties,
understand how atoms combine to form molecules,
tell how metals have properties in common,
describe what elements are, and
discuss how scientists know that atoms arrange in orderly ways.
