Lesson Preview
The development of vocabulary used in literary works is emphasized in the seventh and eighth grades. Through this development, students identify idioms, analogies, metaphors and similes. Students continue to clarify word meaning through definitions, examples and context
Extensive opportunities to read are essential to vocabulary development. The more students read, the more their vocabulary increases. However, while reading is the primary means of increasing vocabulary, there is still a need for teacher-directed instruction throughout the year.
