  1. How far does a man travel if he starts a trip at 9:15 AM and travels at a constant rate of 30 miles per hour until 11:45 A.M.?  (Remember: Distance = Rate X Time)

    Time = 11:45 - 9:15 = hrs.
    Rate = 30 mph

  2. A plane traveling at 200 miles per hour is 10 miles from an airport.  How long will it take the plane to reach the airport?

    D = 10 miles;  R = mph

  3. The scale on a map is " = 200 miles.  What is the actual distance between 2 cities which are 6" apart on the map?

    Let x = Actual distance.  Form a proportion:

        x = 1200 (2) = 2400 miles

  4. If 4 times Jared's age is increased by 5 less than twice his age, the result is 55.  How old is he?

    Let x = Jared's age
    4x + (2x - 5) = 55
                    6x = 60
                      x = 10 years old

  5. If 6 more than 3 times a number is increased by 5 less than the same number the result is 9.  Find the number.

    Let x = the number
    3x + 6 + x - 5 = 9
                4x + 1 = 9
                       4x = 8
                         x = 2
