Lesson 17
Graphs
Practice Exercise 17-1
Directions: Before going further to learn about other kinds of graphs, try
these review problems to check your comprehension of Pie Graphs and
Venn Diagrams. When you finish, compare your answers to those in the
key..
- The budget for a small college runs 35% for faculty salaries,
30% for administrative salaries, 25% for buildings and maintenance,
and 10% for debt payments. Create a Pie Graph to represent the
budget.
- A small high school has 120 graduating students who are given
a demographic survey. Under the item for "Ethnicity" 60
put White, 30 put Black, 10 put Latino, 12 put Asian, and 8 put
Other. Create a Pie Graph to represent the ethnic makeup of that
graduating class.
- Of all the people in class that own bicycles, seven own
mountain bikes, seventeen own standard ten speeds, and three own
stunt bikes. Explain whether this data should be represented by a
Venn Diagram or a Pie Graph.
- One hundred and fifty high school students are surveyed to
find out how many like soap operas, talk shows, and pro wrestling.
It turns out sixty like soap operas, seventy like pro wrestling, and
forty like both. Anyone who likes soap operas or pro wrestling also
likes talk shows. One hundred and ten like talk shows. Create a Venn
Diagram to represent the information gathered from the survey.
- A thousand new freshmen are polled on their favorite hobbies.
Thirty mention martial arts, eleven mention model airplanes, and
five mention ballroom dancing. The only overlap among these freshmen
is that one person who likes model airplanes also likes ballroom
dancing. Create a Venn Diagram to represent the information
gathered.
