Correct Practice Exercise 8-2 using the Answer Key
below.
- What is the difference between a
rational number and an irrational number?
A rational
number is one that specifies an exact value, while an
irrational number has a continuing remainder and does not
specify an exact value.
- What is the difference between a real
and an imaginary number?
A real number stands
for a specific mathematical value. An imaginary
number does not stand for any value that we can recognize
or calculate by using any of the math that we have
learned.
- What does 273 mean?
To cube 27, or raise it to the
third power, which is 27 x 27 x 27.
- 42 = 16
- 33 = 27
- 54 = 625
- 25 = 32

- Why can't you calculate the square
root of -2?
The square root of
-2 is an imaginary number, because a positive times a
positive equals a positive, and a negative times a
negative equals a positive, so there is no number
that can be multiplied by itself to get a negative two
(-2).
