Lesson 8
Powers, Roots and Radicals
Problems 8-2  Answer Key

Directions: Correct Problems 8-2 using the Answer Key below.

  1. Why is the square root of 14 an irrational number?

    It calculates out to 3.741657387, has a continuing remainder and is not an exact value, and we cannot represent it by dividing one integer into another.

  2. Why is an imaginary number?

    Because (+2) x (+2) = +4, and (-2) x (-2) = +4; so there is no real number that can be multiplied by itself to get -4.

  3. What does 153 mean?

    To cube 15, or raise it to the third power, by taking 15 x 15 x 15.

Multiply the factors in the following:

  1. 122 = 144

  2. 43 = 64

  3. 64 = 1296

  4. 63 = 216

Find all of the square roots indicated for the following terms:

  1. =

  2. =

  3. =

  4. =

Find the positive roots for the following terms:

  1. = 3

  2. = 5

  3. = 10

  4. = 8

Use Table 1 or a calculator to find the positive square roots of the following terms (to two decimal places).

  1. = 4.12

  2. = 5.39

  3. = 7.07

  4. = 9.38

Multiply as indicted:

  1. = 15
