Until 1776, the British ruled the American colonies. The British imposed rules, laws, and taxes against the American colonies. They did this to keep Americans under their control and to collect taxes from them. Many influential people and movements helped to make America independent.

In this lesson, we will explore the major events that occurred before the founding of the new nation. We will also relate their importance to the development of American Constitutional democracy.
