In 1999, a runner named Hicham El Guerrouj
set the world record for running the fastest mile at 3:43.13. Speed is something
we respect. We like cars that go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in a few seconds.
We like football players that can run fast.
Velocity is the rate of change in the position of an object. Speed, direction,
time, and distance all influence velocity. In this lesson you will learn about
velocity and how to calculate different factors associated with it.
When you have completed this lesson, you will be able to
define position in relation to some choice of a standard reference point and a set of reference directions,
solve problems involving distance, time, and average speed,
describe the velocity of an object by specifying both the direction and the speed of the object,
relate changes in velocity to changes in speed, direction, or both, and
interpret graphs of position versus time and graphs of speed versus time for motion in a single direction.
