It All Adds Up!

This exercise is about Tim and Tom and their 12 apples.

There are 12 apples. Tim and Tom decide to start sharing the apples. They divide them in different ways. First, Tim has only 1 apple and Tom has 11 apples.

Next Tim has 2 apples and Tom has 10.

Each boy has different amounts, but they all add up to 12 apples.

Tim and Tom can divide the apples many different ways and still have 12 apples.

Tim and Tom always have 12 apples.

Exercise 2

Mary and Dave are sharing these 6 crayons:

Mary needs to use yellow and blue first. Dave will use green, orange, brown, and red.

They still have the same amount – 6!

What if Dave wants to use green, red, and brown?

Dave and Mary may be using more or less crayons each time, but the number of crayons they both use is the same. Six!

Exercise 3

Joe, Jennifer and Julie are sharing 12 balloons:

Joe wants to give 2 yellow, 1 red and 2 blue balloons to his mother.

Jennifer needs 1 yellow 3 red and 1 blue balloons.

Julie uses 1 yellow and 1 blue balloons.

Joe, Jennifer and Julie may use different number of balloons, but all together they still have 12 balloons.

Exercise 4

Sandy, Mandy, Benny and Hanna have 20 marbles together. There are 5 green, 5 blue, 5 rend and 5 purple ones.

Sandy wants to play with 2 green, 1 blue, 3 red and 1 purple marbles.

Mandy wants to play with 1 green, 3 blue, 1 red and 2 purple marbles.

Benny wants to play with 1 green, 1 blue, 1 red and 1 purple marble.

Hanna wants to play with 1 green and 1 purple marble.

Sandy, Mandy, Benny and Hanna played with different number and color marbles but all together they still had 20 of them.
