Sample Selection Procedures - Pre-test

Answer the following questions.

 1.

Joan wanted to find out if the people in her city liked ice cream. Joan went to a food court in a mall to ask the people if they liked ice cream. She thought it would be a good location since food court has 3 different ice cream stores. The ice cream stores and the table she sat at were away from the main part of the mall. She asked as many people as she could as they walked by her table. Is the sample she collected a random sample?

 2.

Is there a bias in the sample that Joan collected? If it is biased, what factors lead to the sample being biased?

 3.

Simon wanted to find out what flavor of ice cream people liked most. He asked all the students in the 5th grade at his school. Is there a bias in the sample that Simon collected?

 4.

Jane did the same survey as Simon, but she called every 100th person in the phone book and asked them what their favorite ice cream flavor is. Is there a bias in the sample that Jane collected?
