Not only do all scientific and technical phenomena involve measuring processes, but our everyday lives depend on measurements, as well. We use various scales to measure different phenomena; among them is the angular scale.

Angular measurement is the most important tool in all applied sciences. It is the fundamental measurement in studying celestial bodies and their configurations, geography, navigation, topography (study of the crystalearth's surface), satellite navigation systems, structures of molecules, optics (physical behaviors of light), and crystallography (structures of crystals). In design, civic and mechanical engineering, cartography (making of maps), and so on, the notions of angle and angular measurement are also fundamental.

Even, when the space shuttle wants to enter the earth’s atmosphere, we determine its path based on the angle it forms with the atmosphere. The concept of angle is everywhere in today’s world!

In this lesson, we will develop the basic concepts of angle and angular measurements, and will show how to deal with problems that involve angular measures. We will also explore the basic principles about the relationships between the area of a triangle and its interior angles.

Objectives

Upon completing this lesson, you will know:

  • How to define an angle
  • How to measure an angle in both radians and
  • How to convert angle measurements
  • How to determine the area of a triangle
