Compare and Contrast Media Coverage of the Same Event
In our previous lesson, we talked about ways to form and express your opinions effectively. This is relevant to this study of the media. Many news outlets (newspapers, magazines, radio, television, etc.) claim to give you unbiased news. But they don't – because there is no such thing as a completely objective point of view. There can't be. Because, as we learned in the last instruction, all of us view the world from our own perspective. We have no choice. Many journalists try to adhere to professional ethics of objectivity and fairness, but bias almost always creeps in. This doesn't mean that what they report isn't true. Bias isn't good or bad – it just is. And you will be a much better consumer of the news once you learn to spot it.
